[Any Version] Database Configuration for GoDaddy

vBulletin Tips

It seems that more people have problems configuring vBulletin’s config.php to work on GoDaddy’s servers more than anything else. Here are the instructions on how to do that and get vBulletin installed as quickly as possible.

Please note: vBulletin only works on GoDaddy’s Linux based servers. If you currently have a Windows based server, then you will need to contact GoDaddy to have them convert your account to Linux.

Get your GoDaddy Database Information.
Go to www.godaddy.com and log in with your account ID and password.
Click on My Account
Click on Hosting Account List. This should open a new window.

[Any Version] Forum Usability

vBulletin Tips

Forum Usability – Make member’s life easier

Although this guide focuses primarily on vBulletin usability and using example directly from the vBulletin forum software, it can be applied to most forum software.

Ask yourself…

When setting up your forum, you need to ask yourself, what is it purposes and who’s the target audience. Determine the goals of your forum/community.
It doesn’t matter how cool your site looks, if users find it impractical they will head to your competitors site, which is only one click away.

Help your users

Users are impatient. They hate having to learn new site navigation. Make your navigation obvious…

vBulletin Tips

Members usually missuse the visitor messages feature, if someone left them a message on their profile they by wrong reply to it in the same profile and not in the other member’s. And then wouldn’t count as a conversation and the other member won’t be notificated that you replied to him. That’s why I thought about a solution to hide the editor from your own profile so you don’t post on your profile and be able to post on others with a very simple template edit.

vBSEO.com Down this Morning

vBSEO

Hello all,

Our server crashed this morning. Additionally, the bind name server service failed to restart, so even while the server was restarted, the domains wouldn’t resolve properly.

Initially we thought it was a dns propagation problem, and were waiting for it to propagate, hence the big delay in getting back online. Various hours later we found out it was the bind problem.

Apologies for the downtime.

[Any Version] A YouTube Search Box (HTML form)

vBulletin Tips

Hi,

This is my first Tip submission (not sure if it should go here)…

I have wanted a YouTube search box on my board for a while now, but if you search your YouTube account for such code, or buttons, etc., (not the searching for buttons in the YouTube searchbox; that would result in some odd things, I’m sure) you will be redirected to the Google API documents that tell you all sorts of wonderful things, but nothing simple as the HTML form code for a YouTube seachbox…

I believe I can help, somewhat…

I’ve stuck this HTML code into…
