Wordpress

Back in July we posted about the remarkable project that WNET (PBS of NYC) put together with Tierra to launch 50 sites in ten months using one CMS, WordPress.

Dan Goldman and Jamie Trowbridge who headed up that project, were kind enough to present a case study of how it was all done, at the recent WordCamp NYC:

The other day, I had asked plugin developers to dish out their wish list for the plugin repository. Olivier published a comment recommending a plugin called WATS or WordPress Advanced Ticketing System as a way of handling support on your own website.

After installation, users need to visit the Wats Options page within the Settings menu to configure the plugin. The top of the settings page has a donate button if you want to send a little coin to the plugin author which is not intrusive or bothersome. While configuring the plugin, you can click on each menu title to…

Alex King: Twitter Tools 2.2.1

Wordpress

I’ve released a new version of Twitter Tools, my WordPress plugin that creates a full 2-way integration between your blog and your Twitter account.

This release addresses two bugs:

The use of the native json_decode() function, required by the changes in WordPress 2.9 (version 2.1) created a problem for users with servers running 32-bit PHP. The json_decode() function treats the tweet ID field as an integer larger than it can handle, which causes the issues. Thanks to Joe Tortuga and Ciaran Walsh for sending in the fix. Of note: I haven’t had a chance to set up a 32-bit PHP install so…

Donncha: WP Super Cache with Object Cache support

Wordpress

Here’s a quick post to encourage brave testers. I’m adding object cache support to WP Super Cache so you’ll be able to store your cached files in a memcached backend instead of disk.

It’s not complete but it’s running on this blog and well, you’re reading this which means it’s doing something and not breaking! If you want to give it a go grab the development version from the download page.

There are few caveats, but three spring to mind:

It won’t cache anything for “known” users. That is users who are logged in or leave comments. Usually a tiny minority of the…

Matt: Cool Touch Interface

Wordpress

While reading Michael Arrington’s essay Why Desktop Touch Screens Don’t Really Work Well For Humans I came across this video, which I thought was pretty cool.

Hopefully this whets your appetite for whatever comes out of Apple tomorrow. Should be an interesting day for WordPress.com as well: whenever Apple does a major announcement we blow past all our previous traffic records. The current one-day record is 63.5 million pageviews.

For all of you looking to register your new blog domains, GoDaddy is having another domain sale as they often do.

Just enter BOWL2010 in the coupon form to see the discounted price of 99 cents along with the additional 18 cents ICANN fee. If any of you are aware of other coupons to lower the price, please post in the comments. Thanks SlickDeals

While we are on the subject, how did you name your blog? Was it based on the domain name you could register or did you think about it for a while?
