I would say the most important directory to be listed to is the DMOZ directory.

http://dmoz.com/

It is currently, I believe, the largest and best known directory out there. It has a high Pagerank and is constantly referred to by search engines. It is all human-editted, so submission also takes a nice amount of time. If you are to submit there, don't submit again, be patient, as some of the editors there are evil.

I found a link to a search engine submission site today (I'm sure some of you have been there allready) that I think is pretty neat It submits to over 160 engines and you just have to confirm the submissions on just a few of them

Make sure you have a "special" email account for this purpose, you never know what they use your email address for

Anyway, here is the link I found http://freesubmit.org
