I've been getting more members to my site. Some of them are even posting! But besides creating intro threads, none of them really create threads. They respond to threads already created. It's fine by me since they're posting. But my question is, would it be a bad idea to create an announcement telling them to not be afraid to create new threads, and that creating new threads is the best way to start discussions, etc.? What are your thoughts?

I dont think they are afraid to make new threads, but are probally compliancent with the ones already created. Why not try encouraging more threads to be made by creating a competition to see who could make the most etc .. ?

I would do that but I already have a contest going for who can create the best article. No one's doing it though except me.

Well, I did the same on my boards, make an announcement of getting things active, and that it is fun to create your own threads. And did help, my members are getting more threads started of there own.

And if a contest isn´t working, I´ll just lock them up, or delete them, and leave them be for the time being. And I´ll try another contest which hopefully will work ^^

I posted a general announcement about some updates I've made to the site. I included some messages about posting more. Hopefully they'll all read it and post more threads...

It sounds a lot like my members. They rarly make their own threads. Infact, you scroll threw my forum and you see mostly threads I've made

Oh no don't do so.
I think if someone has something to post, he/she will do.
If you try to force this or make a contest out of it you will get thread, ok, but the content is really bad.

Thinks like 'Hello I am also here' or 'I want to win the contest' will come up

Better is to check the actual posts and give some very good writers another level in your board which allows them to do more.
Don't announce it.
Sooner or later people will find out and try to get this also

What do you mean by "allows them to do more"? Like added PM space, higher avatar allowances? Or staff positions?

My friend Nitro Bahamut...he doesn't need to post alot of threads because his members already do it enough but if you scroll thru his forum you'll see like half the threads are his. I think it's impressive considering he has 1826 threads and 10,909out of 40,799 posts.

He says it's all about the members you get. His forum recently started dying down in activity alittle so for the first time since he opened the forum he advertised...I found that amazing he didn't have to advertise O.O
