Why you ask? First of all, it is free. Second it has an easy and understandable control panel which gives so many features for you too choose from to your board.
You'd be surprised at how simple the vB Admin CP is, as well. And you are correct, it's easy to get the hang of IF.

vBulletin. IMO it's easier to understand.

I would have to say vBulletin. vBulletin is a lot easier to comprehend, that's partially why I registered here at Staff-Lounge.

What's wrong with phpBB that no one is using it?

Um. Normally, the sites are just the name of the software.

Invision Power Board, since I've been using InvisionFree for a long time, I'm familiar with IPB's Admin Control Panel, and therefore, making it easier to...do stuff, yeah, although my second choice would be vBulletin, because I'm a bit familiar with that too.

I've gotten IPB 2.0.4 recently, and I love it, improves my decision with IPB being the best even more.

I've stood by vBulletin since 2001 and have never used another software since. In my mind, I feel it's the best as it allows for extensive customization, has an active hacking community and they are always coming up with something new to add to the software.

I also like how they actually test features before they add them to the softare. They may release a few updates, but I'd rather update a bit than to have an insecure software package.

What makes it good, in your opinion?

I prefer vBulletin as well. I've used many different board software over the years and nothing comes close to what vBulletin has to offer in terms of configurability, customization, and overall usability (from the admin side of things).

Having recently taken a look at IPB's admin demo, I will admit the IPB looks like its coming in at a close second these days.

I think it depends on what you will do.
If you want to setup a board for you and a couple of collegues you should take a free board like phpBB.

If you want to run a huge community I suggest vBulletin

I was kind of surprised to see that mine was the first vote for phpBB - easy to customize, a huge community for peer support, more skins/themes than you can count, and a mountain of MODs for pretty much any purpose you can imagine.

There are a lot of myths about security vulnerabilities which are mostly inaccurate - phpBB gets targeted, like Microsoft, because if you can harm it you harm the largest number of people. It's also true that because it's freeware there are a lot of phpBB forums out there that never get updated. And some of the most publicized "phpBB vulnerablilities" in recent years were actually PHP vulnerabilities from servers using older version of PHP - that shouldn't be blamed on phpBB.

That said, I hated vBulletin until 3.5 was released. I'm seriously considering changing now for the first time ever.
