MyBB Team Member Openings

MyBB

Greetings all,

I am here to announce the openings on two teams within the MyBB Group: the SQA team and Support team.

Quality Assurance Team

The MyBB Group is expanding its staff team to include a group of testers, also known as the Software Quality Assurance (SQA) team (you may have already seen some purple-coloured staff members). In light of our forthcoming 2.0 development, which will most importantly consist of a rewrite of the entire MyBB core code, we anticipate many opportunities and avenues for new bugs to arise. For this reason, the MyBB Group is currently looking for several interested and committed community members to join the MyBB Group as SQA team members.

The SQA team in general will be primarily responsible for reviewing and testing development code for all MyBB projects (i.e., all releases of MyBB and the Merge System) on an ongoing basis in various categories such as usability, compatibility and performance. Depending on the position team members may also document test procedures, test results, and creating automated test scripts.

We expect applicants to be knowledgeable in the operation of MyBB. Ideally, applicants will also know and/or use one or more of the following items: PHP, (X)HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Atom, RSS (SQA team members may be assigned specific areas depending on their installed platforms, proficiencies and interests). Also, it would be preferable for SQA team members to be available in urgent situations, for example, in testing security patches before an urgent release.

SQA team members will be part of the official MyBB Group. Members will have read access to the MyBB SVN repository for access to the latest MyBB code, and will also receive other “perks” of being a staff member.

If you are interested in joining the SQA team, please contact us using our contact form (select the subject “Available Team Member Position”) with the following information:

  • MyBB Forum username
  • Background info on yourself
  • Knowledge and/or usage of programming languages, databases
  • Knowledge and/or past experience of testing/SQA and xUnit testing
  • Please indicate what system environment you have for testing (what web server, database management systems, PHP version you are using)
  • Any other information you wish to include to differentiate yourself from other applicants

Note that existing and active community members will be given preferential treatment for these positions due to their existing dedication to the MyBB project.

Support Team

The MyBB Group is also looking new support team members who are dedicated to MyBB and can communicate clearly and professionally in English. As a staff member, you will have more responsibilities including moderating the support forum and handling minor user-related issues. Activeness, knowledge of MyBB, and communication skills are the key criteria; PHP and MySQL experience is not required but may be beneficial.

If you are interested in joining the support team, please contact us using our contact form (select the subject “Available Team Member Position”) with the following information:

  • MyBB Forum username
  • Knowledge/experience of PHP, MySQL (or other database systems), if any
  • Background information on yourself
  • Any other information you wish to include to differentiate yourself from other applicants

Note that existing and active community members will be given preferential treatment for these positions due to their existing dedication to the MyBB project.

Thank you for your interest in MyBB.

Regretfully…
Dale Hay and Scott Hough have moved on from the MyBB team. We thank them for their dedication in the past years and wish them the best of luck in the future.

KDE Launches User Forum, Powered by MyBB

MyBB

From http://kde.org/announcements/forum.php

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KDE Community Launches Web-based Bulletin Board Using MyBB
The KDE Community today launches the new KDE Forum. The new forum uses the bulletin board software MyBB offering users, developers and people interested in KDE a place to help each other, discuss KDE-related topics and exchange ideas. The KDE Forum complements KDE’s UserBase, the home for KDE users as a valuable support resource.

In collaboration with KDE, the developers behind MyBB have decided to release their forum software under the terms of the GPL Version 3. Chris Boulton, project manager at the MyBB Group “The KDE forum guys have come to us with the wish to use our forum software. In this process, we needed to clear out our licensing, also to make it easier for the KDE community to leverage MyBB. As a result of that, we release the MyBB forum now under the terms of the GPL. This was very well-received by the community around MyBB” Entirely in the spirit of Free Software, the KDE Forum team has already contributed a number of plugins for MyBB, supporting the decision taken by the MyBB team.
Rob la Lau, initiator and administrator of the KDE Forum adds “We’ve chosen MyBB as it stands out head and shoulders above other candidates we have considered to adopt for the new KDE Forums. We know that a good piece of software makes a lot of difference to the user, after all we want to create a nice place for everybody to chat about KDE and related questions.”

Sebastian Kügler, member of the KDE e.V. Board of Directors explains where the new KDE Forum fits into KDE communication infrastructure: “We’ve come to believe that mailinglist don’t cut it for all users. KDE becoming increasingly widely used should also offer those that aren’t familiar with the use of email for such discussions a place. The new KDE forum complements KDE’s new end-user knowledge base Userbase that has been launched last month. At the same time, we’re really happy to see that after our request the MyBB team has decided to release their forum software under the terms of the GPL.”

About KDE
KDE is an international technology team that creates free and open source software for desktop and portable computing. Among KDE’s products are a modern desktop system for Linux and UNIX platforms, comprehensive office productivity and groupware suites and hundreds of software titles in many categories including Internet and web applications, multimedia, entertainment, educational, graphics and software development. KDE software is translated into more than 60 languages and is built with ease of use and modern accessibility principles in mind. KDE4’s full-featured applications run natively on Linux, BSD, Solaris, Windows and Mac OS X.

MyBB Goes Open Source, Now GNU GPL v3 Licensed

MyBB

Hi all,

I’m pleased to announce, effective immediately that MyBB is no longer distributed under our own proprietary license agreement and is now distributed and licensed under the popular open-source GNU GPL v3.

The move to a fully open-source compatible license comes as we want to open MyBB up to the community and help support the world of free software.

For those not familiar with the GNU GPL v3 license, the GNU GPL license still allows you to use MyBB for free. You may also take a copy of MyBB, modify it and redistribute your derivative version as long as the internal copyright notices are left in tact and your derivative is also distributed under the GNU GPL license.

You may read the GNU GPL v3 license agreement MyBB is distributed with at: http://www.mybboard.net/about/license/.

Questions:

  • Does this mean I can remove the MyBB ‘Powered by’ line?
In short - yes and no. The MyBB ‘Powered by’ line is no longer a requirement on the bottom of your forums, however if you wish to receive support from the MyBB team, it must be in place on your forum.

The ‘Powered by’ line is how MyBB promotes itself and we receive the majority of our users, we very much would appreciate it if you left it in place as a sign of respect for the hard work that goes in to this application.

  • Which versions of MyBB are GNU GPL v3 licensed?
MyBB 1.4.2 and onwards will be licensed under the GNU GPL v3. Older releases of MyBB (1.4.1, 1.4, 1.2, 1.0 etc) are still licensed under our proprietary license agreement and still subject to the terms and conditions set forward in that agreement.
  • What does this mean for me, the average Joe user?
To the average Joe, this change does not affect the way you use MyBB or run your forums. You do not need to change anything, you just need to make sure you comply with the terms and conditions set out via the GNU GPL - which if you meet our current license agreement, you already do.

If you have any questions or feedback about the license changes, please use the discussion thread and we’ll do our best to answer them.

Regards,
Chris Boulton

MyBB 1.4.2 Released - Maintenance and Security Update

MyBB

MyBB 1.4.2 is a general maintenance release and a security update to the MyBB 1.4 series. It fixes a few high risk and several medium risk and low risk security vulnerabilities. We recommend everybody upgrades to this release immediately or patch their boards with the manual patching instructions below.

This release comes as the result of a professional security audit performed by GulfTech. (As can be verified here) As this security audit cost us a considerable amount out of our own pockets, we ask that if you haven’t already and have a few spare dollars to spare that you consider donating to MyBB.

These vulnerabilities affect MyBB 1.4.1 and several affect previous releases of MyBB 1.2 (including 1.2.14). Older versions of MyBB may also be affected. Please see the post below for upgrade instructions for 1.2.14.

MyBB 1.4.1 to MyBB 1.4.2 Patch
This patch is only for users running MyBB 1.4.1. If you are running an older version of MyBB then please download MyBB 1.4.2 from the MyBB site and update to it.

Please download the attached ZIP archive and replace the files in your forum directory with those from the ZIP archive.

[attachment=11033]

If you wish to manually patch your board please download “mybb_1401_patches.txt” and follow the instructions in that file.

[attachment=11032]

For the upgrade of 1.4.1 to 1.4.2, the upgrader IS required — this is so that templates may be updated. The manual patch set instructions only fixes the high risk and medium risk vulnerabilities and is only made available to temporarily secure your forum until you have time to run the complete upgrade. We strongly recommend updating as soon as possible.

Reporting MyBB security vulnerabilities
If you think you’ve found a vulnerability in MyBB, we advise you not to publicly post it on these forums or publicly release information about it elsewhere until we’ve had time to prepare and release a patch.

As always, you can send through security related messages on the MyBB website from the Contact Us page.

Donating to MyBB - Help Secure the Future of MyBB

MyBB

Hi all,

We’ve just set up a page on the MyBB website with information about donating to MyBB. It’s accessible here: http://www.mybboard.net/about/donations

Donations can be made via PayPal and donating to MyBB helps secure the future of MyBB as being a free discussion forum system - it helps us pay for our server for the website, domain names, and any other project related costs.

At the moment, the MyBB 1.4 code is currently undergoing a complete security audit from GulfTech. This is due to the security vulnerabilities found in MyBB since the MyBB 1.4 release. Obviously this isn’t cheap for us - and it’s an out of the pocket expense for myself.

At the moment the only income for covering expenses on the MyBB website is the advertising on the main page, as well as some very much appreciated donations every month from MyBB Central.

If you too, would like to help support MyBB, then it’s as simple as visiting the above page and making a donation to the MyBB Group. Donations can be as little or as much as you like, every little bit helps MyBB.

To all of those who’ve donated to MyBB, both past and those who donate in the future - thank you for your contributions!

MyBB 1.4 Released

MyBB

I’m very proud to announce that MyBB 1.4 has been released and is now available directly on the MyBB website.

MyBB 1.4 is a great leap forward in terms of both functionality of the board as well as a complete overhaul of the administrator control panel. There are over 70+ new features that have been built in to MyBB and the MyBB code base has almost doubled in size since MyBB 1.2.

We’ve also updated the MyBB Website to contain a feature tour and full feature listing for what’s available in MyBB 1.4: http://www.mybboard.net.

We recommend that all users upgrade to 1.4 so they can take advantage of the great new features in MyBB 1.4, but we recommend you plan your upgrade first. More information on upgrading and changes to templates, themes, plugins and languages can be found below.

From me personally, I’d like to thank all of the MyBB staff both past and present for the fantastic work they’ve put in to MyBB 1.4 - it’s been a long time, but I’m ever so grateful for your dedication and support of the MyBB project. A huge thanks should also go to our beta testers who’ve been on the MyBB 1.4 beta from the start, and finally for the community for their fantastic support.

MyBB 1.4 Beta

MyBB

Hi all,

We are now accepting more beta testers to test the beta of MyBB 1.4. We have already been beta testing MyBB 1.4 with a select group of testers for the past several months. We’ve fixed over 500 bugs since the beginning of testing several months ago all while including countless small suggestions to better your experience with MyBB. Staff Team Additions and the Mentor Group

MyBB

First of all, thank you to everybody who has submitted a staff team application in the past few months. We are pleased to announce five new staff members to the MyBB Team.

Chris will be joining us as a support team member. nickman, LegosJedi, yottabytewizard, and ZiNgA BuRgA will be joining us as developers. Please join me in welcoming them to the team!

In addition, we are rolling out a group of experienced MyBB users who are named the MyBB Mentors, identified by their light-blue username and also on the Forum team page. We have invited several knowledgable MyBB users who regularly answer questions on the General Support forums to be in this group. Although Mentors are not officially on the MyBB Staff team, you can expect more reliable answers from these users, as they have shown they have more experience with MyBB than the average user.

We hope with these community additions, we will better serve the MyBB Community with both support and development.

MyBB 1.4 now running on MyBB Community Forums

MyBB

Hi all,

As you may have already noticed, we’re now running the beta version of MyBB 1.4 here on the MyBB Community Forums.

We’ve been moving forward internally with the beta in preparation for this stage and I’m happy to announce that we’re now closer than ever to a release.

Our intentions for upgrading these forums are simple:

  • Get the front end of MyBB 1.4 in the hands of as many people as possible. This is the portion of MyBB that needs the most testing as it’s what’s most used by your users
  • Ensure that the MyBB 1.2 through 1.4 upgrade is as smooth as possible. This upgrade does a lot of work behind the scenes, restructuring the database and rebuilding the themes. We need to ensure it’s as stable as possible

As this is still beta software, we expect there are going to be bugs, anomalies and other related issues - please report anything you find in the discussion thread (and shortly the MyBB 1.4 forums)

Thank you,
MyBB Group
